The author of the study analysed 16 selected narrative sources from the Czech lands. His aim was to attempt to present how the relationship of two social groups (nobility and burghers) had been changing from the point of view of chroniclers. To illustrate the relationship between the aristocracy and the towns, three chronicles have proven to be the most helpful sources: Chronicle of Dalimil (Kronika tak řečeného Dalimila), Chronicle of Zbraslav (Zbraslavská kronika) and Old Czech Annals (Staré letopisy české). For the so-called Dalimil, it was the attitude towards Germans that was decisive for the assessment of social groups. He highlighted the nobles...

Based on the excerpt from the annual reports, the study brings a list of celebrants and preachers who were invited to celebrate the feast of St. Ignatius of Loyola and St. Francis Xavier to Telč (Jesuit Church of the Name of Jesus) between the years 1700-1740. It focuses on celebrations of the feast taking place in the House of the Third Probation, where the Jesuits were preparing to make their final promises and where, as we suppose, the cult of Jesuits saints could be even more alive than in other colleges. The article shows that both roles - both the preachers and the celebrants of the celebratory/famous mass - were usually assigned by the rectors...

Parish and dean libraries and their development during the 19th century are very specific and it is closely related to the involvement of priests into the process of national revival. The clergy is the representant of the country intelligence and it is given a new role of national revisionists and they are made to find their own position between their devotion to the church and the devotion to their nation. With the rise in quantity and quality of books, changes were undergoing in the libraries, which are traceable in clerical libraries as well. For that matter, many of those are coming into existence during the 19th century. The dean library of František...

The article presents a biography of Andrzej Krzywoń (1844-1911), a pastor in Międzyrzecze and Skoczów in Cieszyn Silesia, a Silesian senior, and from 1909 a Moravian-Silesian superintendent. He was one of the most important figures in the The Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession in the Habsburg Empire at the beginning of the 20th century. I pay special attention to his attitude towards national issues. Krzywoń came from an ethnically Polish family, he studied in Vienna and Heidelberg. After returning to Cieszyn Silesia, he became involved with the (pro)German faction, similarly to most pastors in the region. In elections for Silesian senior...

There was not a major military conflict in the west and central Europe during the period between the Napoleonic wars and the year 1815 to the revolutionary year 1848. Nevertheless, during the given period existed several critical situations, which were an imminent threat to European peace. One of such situations was the July revolution in France in the year 1830 followed by the revolutionary wave coming through the whole of Europe, which did not miss the Italian peninsula as well. Revolutions sparked in three Italian states, in the Duchy of Modena, the Duchy of Parma and in the State of the Church, at the beginning of February 1831. The Habsburg rulers...

The Czechs in Croatia have been raising the interest of Czech researchers (historians and ethnologists) for a long time. According to my research, there is not a comprehensive work among the up now compiled works which would deal with expatriate Czechs and which would capture the complex past and presence of the Czech minority in Croatia. There are partial studies in generally focused monographical works or qualification works, which, due to the shortness of research visits, can bring information about Croatian Czechs in a simplified or in a misleading manner. The absence of the attempt to emic approach towards the studied topics and minimal extraction...

The article presents the Olomouc lawyer, member of the Moravian Diet and national activist Richard Fischer and his activities during the First World War. The author of the article used mainly Fischer's memoirs, which were published in the 1930s. They represent the central work of almost eighty publications published since 1918. They reflect Fischer's private and above especially his public life.R. Fischer spent the first years of the war in seclusion in his native Loštice, and in the penultimate year of the war, he served in the military in Vienna. Thanks to his social status, he was able to visit Olomouc on a regular basis. At the end of 1917,...

Since its establishment, Czechoslovakia faced disfavour not only from its neighbours, but also from an important segment of the population within its own borders. This led to the fact that even though it managed to preserve its democratic character throughout the interwar period, at the same time, it had a relatively sophisticated and powerful intelligence apparatus falling under several ministries, which should have prevented monopolization of power. Czechoslovak security forces kept an overview of the most important groups and representatives of Russian emigration. In general, all emigrant groups were closely observed, including the Russian ones,...

The study deals with the analysis of British-Canadian relations during the time of the Chanak crisis, which started in autumn 1922 by a treat of possible armed conflict between British units and Turkish nationalists, who sought new territorial arrangement of Turkey. British government lead by the prime minister David Lloyd George hoped that the dominions including Canada would hear out the appeal of military co-operation, which would show the Turkish nationalists the power of the British empire. Nevertheless, the then Canadian prime minister William Lyon Mackenzie King did not want to succumb national interests to the British ones. While his predecessors...

The District Court in Jeseník represented an example of a legal workplace in a frontier affected by a post-war transfer of inhabitants. The office had to deal with a lack of personnel and material and it was overloaded especially with a retributive agenda during the studied period. A part of the staffs consisted of people who did not posses a prior legal experience. Unsuitable living and transportation conditions with the occupational workload lead to disciplinary actions in some cases. The lack of supervisor staff caused occasional prison breaks. In the studied period, we can observe centralization of the agenda into the seat of the political district...
