Lenka Doová

Historica Olomucensia vol. 49 (2015), 13-30 | DOI: 10.5507/ho.2015.026

This study deals with the saga dedicated to King Sverre Sigurdsson, one of the most significant Norwegian rulers in the High Middle Ages. It is a unique source which was written in the order of the vanquisher, who, though originally a priest, obtained the Norwegian crown thanks to his military skills and became a founder of the dynasty bearing his name. Sverris saga, especially its first part that was created during the main protagonist's life, is critically examined. First and foremost, the article aims at arguments used by the author for propaganda or defence of Sverre's acts. The study attempts to answer whether it is possible to consider this narrative...

Vývoj majetkových pomerov nižšej šľachty v rokoch 1300-1500: na príklade regiónu Oravy

Lukáš Tkáč

Historica Olomucensia vol. 49 (2015), 31-53 | DOI: 10.5507/ho.2015.027

The aim of this study is to outline basic features of the development of property relations of the low nobility in years 1300-1500 in Orava Region. The research revealed that the low nobility as a social class appeared in the position of a minority owner during the whole examined period. On the contrary, during two hundred years members of the low nobility notably increased a number of localities, which they held, which was also apparent in the rise of a proportional representation of their property in the total number of localities in Orava. From the perspective of the settlement typology, an exclusively low nobility's domain was an ownership of villages,...

Příhody Václava Vratislava z Mitrovic v kontextu dobových turcik

Martin Tesař

Historica Olomucensia vol. 49 (2015), 55-72 | DOI: 10.5507/ho.2015.028

In the last decennium, The Adventures of Baron Václav Vratislav of Mitrovice has come into focus thanks to the intensively led research of early modern Turkish literature from the Bohemian lands and developing interest in Islam and its culture. Vratislav's work is currently appreciated by historians for his observations about Turkish society as well as Islam and Muslim everydayness, which is in the sharp contrast with the older literature. It vaguely asserts that Vratislav literally borrowed the cited passages from the available Turkish literature and has brought nothing new in this respect. In the first part, the study analyses a reception of Vratislav's...

The life story of a secondary and university teacher Dr. Franz Hochegger reflects problems of the education and its reforms in the Austrian monarchy in the second half of the 19th century. After the short practice as a private teacher and a study of classical languages at the Philosophical Faculty in Vienna, Franz Hochegger attempted to become a university teacher - this part of his life was interconnected with the Charles-Ferdinand University in Prague for a year. However, the majority of his pedagogical and research activities is related to the secondary education. As a director of the Academic Grammar School in Vienna, he contributed to not only...

Studenti Slovanského gymnázia Olomouc 1870-1938

Martin Vašíček

Historica Olomucensia vol. 49 (2015), 91-108 | DOI: 10.5507/ho.2015.030

The article deals with socio-cultural features of students of Slavonic Grammar School in Olomouc in years 1870-1938. Results show quite a unique case of influence which the establishment of the republic had on a student structure. While until 1918 the school was attended almost by one hundred percent of Roman Catholic students, subsequently this confession was meagrely represented and on the contrary, the newly established Czechoslovak Hussite Church became noticeably confessed by students. Another changes are visible in the transformation of the middle class. Students, which were distinguished by a low number of the higher middle class and the new...

Michael Viktořík

Historica Olomucensia vol. 49 (2015), 109-125 | DOI: 10.5507/ho.2015.031

One of the key trends of the modern historiography dealing with the 19th century is a research of municipal administration. Nevertheless, apart from the society activities or the possibility to work on one's own in the economic field (to conduct business), this is considered to be one of the pillars of modern civil society. In the case of the research of municipal administration, a wide range of topics is analysed (for instance a socio-professional structure of municipal councils and their influence on a development of the given area), including matters related to municipal elections. The author of the presented study aims just at this factor and attempts...

Lukáš Novotný

Historica Olomucensia vol. 49 (2015), 127-141 | DOI: 10.5507/ho.2015.032

In 1907-1908 Great Britain made contracts for three important railways, for which it was necessary to assure funding of their construction - Kowloon-Cantoon, a loan agreement signed on 7 March 1907, Tientsin-Pukow (where Britain shared success with Germany), signed on 13 January 1908), and Shanghai-Ningpo, an agreement signed on 6 March 1908. However, all of them were licenses from 1898, which might be realized only after few years of protracted negotiations. After the end of Russo-Japanese war in 1905, London perceived that the existing policy of dominance in a relation to the Middle Kingdom could not continue and time for a change came. It might...

The article represents a probe into problems of the exile life. The concrete example of Czechoslovak exiles in Australia, where they left after the beginning of the Communist regime in February 1948, shows activities of their societies. It thoroughly describes differences of opinion, typical for exile, and mutual, often personal conflicts, which crippled social and cultural work itself. The Council of Free Czechoslovakia as a top body of the world Czechoslovak exile corresponded with exile societies. It is just the Council, in which all the mutual relations and problems of the whole exile movement are visible. The aim of this study is to demonstrate...

Alternative Public Spheres during the Communist Era in Czechoslovakia: Parallel Space for the Reprobate and the Excluded

Petr Orság

Historica Olomucensia vol. 49 (2015), 183-204 | DOI: 10.5507/ho.2015.035

The period of the Communist era in Czechoslovakia entailed a wholly different treatment with the public sphere, besides. The power-bureaucratic apparat of the Communist Party completely liquidated the authentic public domain. They replaced it by the strictly controlled quasi-public sphere, which became a space, where the regime enforced an official agreement with its doctrine. Everybody, who did not accept the new power politics, was expelled from this sphere. An unintended consequence of a newly stated status quo was the establishment of parallel communication and information systems through which the repressed part of the public attempted to ensure...
