The New Aristocracy Nádherný family is not all that researched a subject in Czech historiography. Most of the research work thus far has focused only on Baroness Sidonie Nádherná and the other members of the family have only been marginally referred to. A rapid social ascension, caused by well thought-out family strategies, was typical for the Nádherný family. This was primarily represented by business activities, charitable activity and attempts at attaining a similar lifestyle as the landed nobility. I focus in this article on the personage of a not particularly known figure Ludvík Nádherný, who was raised to the status of knight of the land in 1865...

The paper was dealing with the British travels of Franz Ernst of Harrach mainly on the basis of his newly found correspondence in the Austrian State Archives. In total, eight British travels of a different character were documented. The first journey, which took place in 1825 and during which he visited a number of mansions of British nobility and landscape parks, deepened Harrach's tending towards the isles, which was later reflected in the construction of Hrádek u Nechanic and the rebuilding of Prugg Castle. The study has also shown that some of the Count's other stays influenced the shape of Hrádek, for example his expedition of the late 1830s and...

The aim of the study is to summarise several factors which greatly influenced the course of British-German relations on an alliance and at the same time explain the foundations for the actual emergence of these negotiations. Within the framework of the established goals, it maps out the situation of the British Empire at the turn of the twentieth century, while accenting the Imperial problems which Great Britain had to face. The Second Boer War, the outbreak of the Boxer Rebellion and the Fashoda Incident had an essential influence on these events. As a result of these above-mentioned events, Britain reached the conclusion that the politics of Splendid...

All of the other localities in the first six largest Moravian towns according to the population census of 1910 (that is in Brno, Moravská Ostrava, Jihlava, Vítkovice and Olomouc) had town hall support for German schooling, while Czech schooling was in the position of minority schooling. The situation was different in Prostějov from the year 1892. Czech local leaders held the town hall and also had a strong position in the overall Moravian context of Czech politics. The Czech town self-government in Prostějov immediately called for maximum support for the development of Czech schooling. Prostějov experienced a significant increase in children...

After the partial liberalisation of the post wartime economy and gradual re-introduction of a normal trade regime between Austria and Czechoslovakia in the year 1921, the political relations of Prague were subordinate to the financial and property relations in the form of iunctum between trade and financial agreements, approved on the basis of the wishes of financial circles and the Ministry of Finance. The protectionist character of the trade policy of Czechoslovakia was fully manifested in the trade agreement itself, which did not correspond with the function of the former main producer in the monarchy which inherited two thirds of its industrial...

The personage of Colonel doc. PhDr. Vítězslav Gardavský, CSc. (1923-1978) is perceived primarily in the context of his writing and philosophical output. His activities in army and military science are, however, often neglected. Gardavský greatly impacted the Marxist-Christian dialogue of the 1960s, when his career as a military teacher and scholar culminated. His views on the position of Germany and the German nation in European society and politics also greatly impacted the new views of Czechoslovak strategies and doctrines. Reformed military science on the defence of Czechoslovakia was summarised in the so-called 68 Memorandum, which came about in...

The study examines the economic situation in the area of mining over the years 1939-1945 using the example of magnesite and talc deposits and companies at the time of the First Slovak Republic, which was primarily located in the regions of Gemer and Malohont. The focus was primarily on the economic conditions and ownership relations in the companies as well as on the mapping out of the mining locations of magnesite and talc, which were located within the territory of the country at the time of the period under study. The paper is a synthesis of the available specialised studies and archive sources, which led to a deeper examination of the selected question.

The topic of Czechoslovak scientific-technical cooperation with the Western Bloc has recently enjoyed a revival of interest, which can be illustrated by the works of Doubravka Olšáková, Valentina Fava, or Emilie Těšínská. Nevertheless, there is still a range of specific aspects that have been omitted from the consideration of contemporary studies, the analysis of which seems to be a prerequisite for a comprehensive depiction of the history of the cross-Curtain flows of know-how, experts and capital. In this respect, it is appropriate to revisit some of the works of more technically oriented authors of the communist and early post-communist era (Miloslav...

The premature Austrian parliamentary elections in October 1971 strengthened the position of Social Democracy with Bruno Kreisky at the forefront by means of the obtaining of the majority of the mandates in the National Council. In light of the expected failure of KPÖ, the Czechoslovak periodicals paid minimal attention to it. They did create, however, a picture of a calculating SPÖ, which in its battle against rising inflation wanted stronger mandates from voters. The successes of the first Kreisky government, the programme differences between the candidate parties (apart from Communists) and the pre-election campaign were practically ignored. These...

The women's electorate in the parliaments of the Third Republic and in the Thirty-eighth Parliament of Great Britain endeavoured to create fairer social arrangements, an integral element of which include assurance of healthy motherhood and achievement of gender equality in everyday life. The issues of infant mortality, improvement of care by medical and nursing institutions or assurance of the improved wellbeing of women and children, were of unquestionable importance to the activities of female MPs in the Czechoslovak Republic and in Great Britain. The female MPs of both countries based their activities on similar expectations, such as equal conditions...
