The study deals with the issues connected with the processing of another's property in private law. It covers the genesis of a legal problem of a treatment of another's property in The Institutes of Gaius from the end of the 2nd century AD. Gaius discussed who would be the owner of spikes taken from another's corn or wine which would be made from someone else's grapes. He gave two possible outcomes - either the owner of the plants which created the substance for the commodities or the person who made the effort to create wine or corn. The study also examines middle thought (media sententia), which was not documented until Corpus Juris Civilis (Code...

Already before the 5th century it was labelled as the most detailed part of the Roman law, which was built on certain values and which was ruled by basic principles. Inheritance was an important part of life for Romans, initially connected to a non-material position of the deceased father and the holder of the homely cult, nevertheless with the development of the society, it was the material part of inheritance which became prevalent. The original Roman legal principles of Inheritance law, however, remained through the evolutional changes and they were alternatively made into exceptions. These principles...

The aim of the present paper is to delineate the translation and editorial activities of Maximos Planudes (Manuel Planoudes, ca. 1255-1305), important figure of the Early Palaeologan Renaissance, with an emphasis on the mapping of motivations for such projects. The reason was neglected army, financial situation, and multicultural character of...

The conclusion of unequal treaties with Western Powers caused unrest in Japan. Adherents of the sonno joi movement demanded expulsion of the foreigners and return of the political power into the hands of the Emperor. The most important of these incidents was a murder of British merchant Charles Richardson by radical samurai from the Satsuma Domain. British representatives demanded a payment of indemnity for this act and a punishment of the culprits. The ruling Tokugawa bakufu was however reluctant to yield because...
