David Papajík

Historica Olomucensia vol. 58 (2020), 13-34 | DOI: 10.5507/ho.2020.001

The study aims to showcase and analyse the fundamental impact Bishop (Archbishop) Albert of Sternberg had on the town of Sternberg. Although the Bishop was very busy administering his dioceses (he was Bishop of Zvěřín, Bishop of Litomyšl, Archbishop of Magdeburg), and had many other obligations with the court of Emperor Charles IV, he always found time to implement his Sternberg plans. No written information indicates that the Bishop had established Sternberg as a town ("second location of the town"). It remains unclear, based on the condition of the documents, whether the Bishop transferred the town centre to its current location or whether this...

Barbora Dietrichová

Historica Olomucensia vol. 58 (2020), 35-55 | DOI: 10.5507/ho.2020.002

The change of the administrative system in the Habsburg monarchy after the 1848/1849 revolution led to, among other things, the establishment of the category of statutory cities, governed by their own statutes and not by the municipal regulations valid for all other cities. One of the trends in the research of municipal governments in the second half of the nineteenth century is to analyse municipal elections, namely the electoral system, the number of eligible voters, voter turnout, etc. The city of Liberec in northern Bohemia had been a statutory city since the very beginning. It, however, resembled non-statutory cities with its electoral rules,...

Marek Šmíd

Historica Olomucensia vol. 58 (2020), 83-100 | DOI: 10.5507/ho.2020.004

The study deals with the National Union of Czech Catholics in the United States at the end of the First World War and in the early post-war years. It pays special attention to its activities, namely three mission trips to Czechoslovakia between 1919 and 1922, which were strongly supported by both the political representatives of Czechoslovakia and the Church dignitaries of the Holy See. The delegates of American Catholics thus built close links between Catholics on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean and also became a strong force in the emerging diplomatic relations between the Holy See and Czechoslovakia in the years preceding the establishment of official...

Ondrej Druga

Historica Olomucensia vol. 58 (2020), 115-136 | DOI: 10.5507/ho.2020.006

The Vojvodina Slovaks had a strong connection with Czechoslovakia in the interwar period. The relationship remained close even after the events of autumn 1938 and March 1939, when they became one of the most active expatriate communities resisting the First Slovak Republic and supporting the restoration of Czechoslovakia. Multiple leaders actively collaborated with the resistance movement, namely through promotion and material support. In one particular case, they directly cooperated with high-level resistance leaders. After the disagreements between Edvard Beneš and Milan Hodža escalated, the majority of the leaders supported Hodža's resistance faction,...

Ladislav Kudrna

Historica Olomucensia vol. 58 (2020), 137-158 | DOI: 10.5507/ho.2020.007

The study introduces lesser known aspects of the Czechoslovak air staff serving in the Royal Air Force. It primarily portrays the diverse life of airmen in-between actions, and the way it changed as the war progressed. The information is placed in broader contexts. Some of the less known archive sources are used, largely from the Central Military Archives in Prague, CZ, and the National Archives of the United Kingdom. The study also includes the journal entries of some of the members of the resistance movement outside Czechoslovakia, and draws on multiple foreign sources of literature.

Milan Hanzl

Historica Olomucensia vol. 58 (2020), 185-210 | DOI: 10.5507/ho.2020.009

The female electorate in the parliaments of the Third Czechoslovak Republic and the 38th United Kingdom Parliament sought to create a fairer social system, including gender equality in everyday life. The members of the Czechoslovak and British parliaments placed a great importance on the education of the school population and on social problems in schools. The MPs of the two countries had similar expectations, such as equal status for female and male teachers, addressing of social problems in the school population, and the involvement of women in education, previously reserved for men only. A consistent argument for enforcing the requirements was the...
