Dependent or subordinate houses of medieval monasteries with the status of provostry have not represented a very frequent issue in the Czech historiography, although its potential has been already emphasized many times. Particularly, a topic of establishment of hierarchically interconnected monastic houses in the Benedictine monastic movement is remarkable, because the basic normative source, the Rule of Saint Benedict, does not count on anything like that and it introduces only abbey as a basic unit. Despite this, at latest in the 13th century, sources began to witness an existence of Benedictine dependencies. The article concentrates on Benedictine...

The article deals with sacramental foundations as elements of making the image of a good Catholic within the framework of the process of Catholization, not only at Catholics but also at possible convertites. It also outlines the question whether the foundations might be used as tools against their Protestant environment of which these individuals wanted to self-determine. The research is based on the case of sacramental foundations meant for the Minorite convent in Krnov from 1630 to 1680 when in the town the process of restoring Catholic religion took place. The article comes to conclusion that sacramental foundations might be used in ways stated...

The Jesuit system of education did not emphasize history as a main subject. Ancient history was taught only as a part of lectures and commentaries on Latin and partially Greek works written by ancient authors. This trend was also reflected by book production of the press at the historical Trnava University (1635-1777). Students might receive the essential part of information regarding Ancient times during lectures on Roman and partially Greek historians in the last two years of their study at the Faculty of Arts. Monothematic history works, aimed at Ancient times, were not published separately in Trnava in the course of the 18th century so that history...

The article is focused on the phenomena of early modern infanticide on the basis of the analysis of three popular prints belonging to the genre of broadsheet literature. Broadsheet literature (single-sheet prints, pamphlets and broadside ballads) as well as prescriptive texts were not only closely connected with critique of improper mothers and fathers but also participated in escalation of arguments among churches. A propagandistic purpose of broadsheets covering infanticide is quite logical, not only because broadsheets dealing with the subject of violence were sold well, but at the same time, for their specific reception which included a public...

Mass emigration from Europe to North America was increasing during the whole 19th century. Originally, the Habsburg Monarchy attempted to solve a vast surplus of labour force by inner migration, however the desire for freedom and an effort to improve the life standards of Monarchy's inhabitants was stronger. Since 1870s, Austrian-Hungarian emigrants began to take place at the top of a number of emigrants coming to the United States of America where demand for labour force was high in that period of time. The transfer of inhabitants also forwarded a development of ports and sailing companies. In the territory of Monarchy, this fact was particularly...

Czechoslovak compatriots in Belgium in interwar period were primarily situated in mining areas. The development of mining in Belgium largely depended on foreign workers because the country did not dispose of enough labour force willing to work in this profession. One of the areas, where a great number of compatriots lived, was the region of Kempen. Here, next to coal mine Winterslag, new residential districts aroused, which served to accommodate both home and foreign workers and their families. Karel Václav Svoboda was born there in 1926 and spent his childhood in this place. The outbreak of the Second World War forced his family to leave his, until...

Since the times of the Habsburg Monarchy, a strong tradition of societies and associations has been developing in Czech society which culminated during the First Czechoslovac Republic. The Nazi occupation noticeably restricted such a growing trend, however, despite this, at the beginning of that period of time, several associations, which united citizens of shattered Czechoslovakia related to the Subcarpathian Rus, were established. One of them has been an organisation called The Association of Emigrants from Carpatho-Ukraine in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. It is certainly most probable that during its four month length existence in the...

Social composition of inhabitants from the region of Hlučín judged in the framework of after war retributions corresponded to the total structure of investigated people in the district of the Extraordinary people's court in Opava. The most serious cases are represented by not very frequent cases of wardens in concentration camps and prisons. Documented cases of informing had a rather accidental character, the cases of career informers, known for instance from near...

The Horn of Africa belongs to the most fragile and politically unstable regions in Africa. This article focuses on the Era of the Cold War with a special attention to the central role of Ethiopia. Moreover, Ethiopia became the seat of the Organization of African Unity in 1963 and Emperor Haile Selassie was one of the most crucial African leaders. Cold War brought some significant...
