The presented text is an attempt to contribute with the translation of little-known source of the Bohemian origin to the history of the Holy Land in the 15th century. The text of the "miracle" was written by the monk John Jerome of Prague (c. 1370-1440) soon after the year 1430. John Jerome travelled to the eastern Mediterranean most probably during the years 1428-1430. He visited territories settled by orthodox Greeks mainly and also the Holy Land. The both visits were mentioned in John Jeromes' texts (sermon and the miracle) and both text should be understood in context - fierce criticism (with no mercy) for "Greek schismatics" together with the...

Franciscus Xavierus Eder's Descriptio provinciae Moxitarum in Regno Peruano is one of the most important historical documents of the 18th century, because it is the only detailed study of the original way of life of the Bolivian Moxo ethnic group. Furthermore, Eder attempted to describe objectively what he had seen and tried to maintain an open-mindedness and reasonableness, similarly to James Cook's writings. The relation of the native inhabitants towards the Christianity, their conception of religion, their culture and the subsequent changes in their values and vision of the world in the process of acculturation are indeed realistically described.The...

At the beginning of the 19th century, scholars were fascinated by new discoveries of Antique marble statues of Greek and Roman origin with traces of original painting, however, in the 20th century the interest in this topic disappeared from incomprehensible reasons. Only in last few decades, the study of 'colour' Antiquity has returned to the attention of European researchers who use modern methods and technologies for examining colour pigments preserved on a surface of Antique marble and bronze. These researches prove that Greek and Roman statues were richly decorated by colours and disprove the rooted myth of puristic aesthetics of Ancient art.

The Moravian historiographer Beda Dudík (1815-1890) is used to be considered a forgotten personality. One gains this impression when compares Beda Dudík with his Bohemian fellow František Palacký whose long lasting "second life" is demonstrated, among others, by numerous evidence in everyday experience of ordinary man uninterested in this personality. Despite this, Dudík's "second life" is worth-thinking about. He appears less in public space and is usually visible only in places closely connected with the life of this educated Benedictine. He can be found much more in texts dealing with this personality, specialized texts as well as popular ones,...

In 1840, Great Britain and the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies disputed about the mining and export over the Sicilian sulphur, which finally culminated in a formally undeclared war in the spring of the same year. Great Britain became a victor and induced the government in Naples, the capital city of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, to cancel restrictions concerning the production of this resource. This, at the present time, not very famous event met with a considerable response in whole Europe at that time, not only among political and diplomatic elites but also the broader public. The conflict was generally perceived such as a demonstration of British...

The war, of which also Italy went to on the side of Prussia, was noticeably influenced by the technical progress of the industrial era. Just at that time, fates of the whole monarchy and Colonel Karl von Tegetthoff, the excellent soldier and the military intelligence chief, came closer. He and his colleagues were...

Silk industry has represented one of the key industries of Šumperk economy until the 1990s. Despite this, the topic has been reflected in history and regional works only a little up till the present. Among other things, the late establishment of this industry in the town's economy has might played a role. First silk factories began to work here in the middle of the 19th century in connection to adverse situation of silk industry in Vienna which represented the main centre of this industry in the monarchy until that time. The transfer of industry into province areas enabled enlargement and modernisation of production. This idea came in the mind of Viennese...

The knowledge of national history played a significant role in lives and works of Catholic modernists. Especially ThDr. PhDr. František Loskot (1870-1932) focused on studying history. At the beginning of 1920 thanks to the effort of a radical part of Czech Catholic modernists, the Czechoslovak Hussite Church, whose interwar theologians and historians adopted elaborated postures on Czech history as well as on period disputes about its sense, was established. ThDr. Karel Farský (1880-1927) took a prominent position among them. His interest in historical topics began during his studies at the Prague Academic Grammar School in years 1892-1900. The theologian...

The study focuses on the still untouched issue - the establishment of a concept of children's summer camps in the Czech lands in years 1948-1955. In the cycle of year-long child's activities, summer holidays represented a delicate season for the Communist regime. In this period, a child was not under the straight influence of a school and a mass organized summer camps belonged among ways which contributed to reduce this weakening. A new conception distanced itself especially from the strong tradition of scout camps. A network of traditional organizers (clubs) disappeared until 1949 and a so called unified children recreation (summer recuperation) was...

The study outlines the role of Czech Communist journalist and official Oldřich Švestka, famous such as a long time editor-in-chief of the Red Truth, a propagator of anti-reform and pro-Soviet (after August 1968 pro-occupation) opinions and a signatory of the so-called letter of invitation, during the trial against peasant Josef Kalvoda soon after the coup in February. Švestka, at that time a not very known journalist - just in the early-stage of his career, described the safety authority what happened during the agricultural meeting in Chotěboř in 1947. The study deals with a resumption of diplomatic relations of the Holy See and Czechoslovakia at the turn of the 1950s and 60s. At the same time, it follows a development and transformation of Czechoslovak-Vatican negotiations in the first half of the sixties. It reveals how much the Communist regime left its anti-ecclesiastical attitude from the fifties and focuses on obligingness, formally manifested by the regime, which was naturally in harmony with ideas of the Soviet Union that connected improvement of diplomatic relations with a propaganda of the Communist ideology in the international forum and intellectual circles in Europe. It shows that those...

The author analyses the development of perspectives on events of the Second World War in history textbooks published in Czechoslovakia and since 1993 in the Czech Republic in years 1945-2015. The examined time period is divided into three phases according to logical political milestones (1945-1948, 1949-1989 and 1990-2015). In the first examined phase (1945-1948), only one history textbook was published. The celebratory tone as well as the relief with the end of war might be seen there. It is not written by an offensive language but rather it praises everybody - politicians from the West as well as from the East. Its interpretation may be considered...
