Both of those crises influenced The German Confederation as well as Austria. It was especially German nationalism which became prevalent and which partially threatened peace created after the Napoleonic wars. Metternich tried to settle the problems with all his might and he tried to prevent a war conflict. His peaceful policy of appeasement indicated that the Habsburg monarchy was not sufficiently strong in case of a war and it would not have had an ally. The reason was neglected army, financial situation, and multicultural character of its inhabitants. Metternich tried to join Austria with German in economy and to prevent economic removal of the Habsburg monarchy from the German area.
