Na přelomu šedesátých a sedmdesátých let 16. století dochází v Rzeczpospolité Obojga Narodów k polemické výměně mezi Jakubem Niemojewským, stoupencem konfese Jednoty bratrské, a kanovníkem Benediktem Herbestem. Ve svých spisech tito autoři nově oživují příběh Husova života a smrti. Oba ho využívají především k odhalení slabých míst protivníka. Herbest jeho prostřednictvím ukazuje na novotu bratrského učení, na jeho kořeny v nedávné minulosti. Co víc, tyto kořeny velmi silně negativizuje. Niemojewský jej obrací v důkaz římské falše, neochoty diskutovat. Stoupenci papeže jsou postaveni do pozice slepých následovatelů nepravého učitele. Historická událost je tak nově interpretována a aktualizována, aby sloužila potřebám pisatele, je způsobem získání legitimity, ale i způsobem, jak delegitimizovat protivníka. Zároveň se v rámci kratičkých statí věnovaných českému reformátorovi projevují základní názorové postoje autorů k podstatě církve, příčinám náboženského konfliktu a roli náboženské plurality ve společnosti.
At the turn of the 1560s and 70s a polemic between Jakub Niemojewski, a devotee of the Unity of the Brethren, and a canon Benedikt Herbest began to arise in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. These authors newly retrieve a story of Hus' life and death in their writings. Both of them use it to reveal weaknesses of the opponent above all. Herbest shows the newness of the Brethren learning through it, its roots in the recent past. And what is more, he strongly emphasises a negative side of these origins. Niemojewski turns it into the proof of the Roman Catholic hood, the unwillingness to discuss. Devotees of the pope are placed into the position of blind followers of the teacher. That is why a historical event is newly interpreted and updated to serve for requirements of a writer and becomes not only the way to obtain the legitimacy but also to delegitimize an opponent. However, at the same time basic attitudes of authors toward the substance of the Church, causes of religious conflicts and a role of religious plurality in society are displeayed through short passages devoted to the Czech reformer.
