Při bádání a tvorbě této práce, jak již sám její název napovídá, posloužila jako stěžejní pramen Bible Václava IV. Tento pramen čítá více než 650 miniatur a další iluminace v bordurách, a skýtá proto poměrně rozsáhlý prostor ke studiu. Jako komparační materiál pak byl využit vzorek rukopisů dostupných na webových stránkách manuscriptoria (www.manuscriptorium.com).
Při svém bádání jsem se pokoušela zjistit, jakým pramenem pro dějiny odívání Bible Václava IV. vlastně je. Jakou roli při zobrazování jednotlivých postav a jejich oblečení hraje symbolika a také, co se daným znakem iluminátoři divákovi pokoušeli sdělit.
První kapitola se kriticky vyrovnává se stěžejním pramenem a shrnuje výhody a úskalí čerpání právě z Bible Václava IV. Práce dále jen stručně nastiňuje podobu módního oděvu konce 14. a počátku 15. století a zabývá se též dobovými látkami a barevností.
Stěžejní část se pak zaměřuje na hledání rozdílů v zobrazování oděvů jednotlivých vrstev společnosti a poukázání na odlišnosti nejen šatu bohatých a chudých či urozených a prostých lidí, ale také na jemnější oděvní diferenciaci v rámci společnosti i za její hranicí, neboť se zabývá také jakousi "rozpoznávací funkcí" oděvu lidí deklasovaných. Práce se dále zajímá o různou podobu oblečení za rozličných okolností či společenských příležitostí, jakými byly korunovace, pohřbívání či cestování.
Práce tak poskytuje vhled do českého vrcholně středověkého odívání a do jeho vnímání a chápání tehdejší společností tak, jak o tom vypovídají iluminace Bible Václava IV., a snaží se porozumět jazyku symbolů, jenž charakterizuje zobrazované postavy právě pomocí jim přisouzeného oblečení.
The main source of my work and research was a huge number of illuminations in the Bible of Wencelas IV, which is kept in the Austrian national library in Vienna. This source shows many different people in various situations and is great for gathering information about clothing. Several manuscripts, originated in the 14th and the beginning of 15th century which are available on the website www.manuscriptorium.com., served as the comparative material. The aim of my research was to find out how the garment in the Bible of Wenceslas IV is displayed and how it reflects the social role of the holder of the garment. Illuminations are hugely influenced by symbolism, e.g. the great role was played by the meaning of colours. I tried to get to know what the illuminators wanted to demonstrate by using particular garments for certain people.
First chapter of my work is concerned with the Bible of Wenceslas IV. It summarizes advantages and disadvantages of using this source for the research of clothing history. Second part describes the fashion in the medieval times briefly. It is also concerned with period cloth and with the symbolism of colours. The main part of this work deals with the garment as an attribute of different social ranks. It is focused on finding of differences in the typifying of clothing of several social positions and pointing out the differences between dresses of the rich and poor people, noble and ordinary people, and also the differentiation in clothing within and beyond borders of society. It is also concerned with illustrating of so-called recognizing function of the garments of declassed people. The fourth chapter takes interest in various forms of clothing for different occasions such as the coronation, the burial or travel.
This work deals with the Czech Gothic clothing at the turn of 14th and 15th century and with understanding of period society in the way that is shown in the illuminations of the Bible of Wenceslas IV. It tries to understand the language of symbols which describe people by assignment of specific garments to them.
